If I Knew Then What I Know Now

I have the privilege of working  with an amazing group of men and women who are on personal journeys toward sobriety. I love them because they are so honest and real.  We talk about many personal and global issues in this group and during one session I asked everyone to complete the sentence… If I knew then what I know now.

This was not an exercise about regret but about celebrating the victory of having a story on the other side of the THEN. Sometimes we get so bogged down about having to go thru something we forget we are telling the story in the “past tense”   The question was a reminder to the group that their life experiences had provided them with the ability to make better choices today.

I believe each day presents us with the chance to apply our NOW knowledge.  However, it is up to us to actually do it.  You have to:

  1. Recognize your pattern of behavior
  2. Remember the outcome or result
  3. Repeat  if it was positive or
  4. Refrain if it was negative

As the saying goes, in order to get different results you’ve got to do something different.  Now don’t think I’m saying there is a simple solution to everything.  What I am saying is that you possess the power within you to make the right decisions.  It starts in your mind and it ends with your actions.  It starts with recognizing and relying on your first hand knowledge of how the situation plays out and simply deciding to change. When you know better you do better. So if you know better…do better!

Intentionally Speaking

I ALWAYS have something to say. Ask anyone who knows me. I have something to say about everything including those rare occasions when I find myself speechless. Talking has been my drug of choice since I was in the first grade.  For this first post, I wanted to introduce myself and my motives.  I am creating this blog because I want to talk with more people at one time.   I want to have this huge conversation on various subjects pertaining  to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  I want to talk to my clients who are in between sessions, those that visit my website at www.rewworks.com but never make an appointment, those who are suffering in silence and looking for information to provide insight, and those who just want to engage in  a conversation that motivates them to action.

I will admit…because I believe in transperancy…I am a little nervous about blogging.  I am nervous because I am awful at grammar and punctuation. I’m largely nervous because I have never done this before BUT I am extremely excited because I have never done this before!  We have this amazing ability to talk ourselves INTO and OUT OF many things. Especially out of  things that are good for us and into those that are not.  I hope that as this relationship grows, my personal experiences and professional information will change the inner conversation and cause you to talk yourself into all things good for you as you determine.
